Snowmobile fees on the rise in Michigan
Proposed bill would see significant increase in cost of trail permits
Michigan snowmobilers may have to pay higher fees next year.
According to the Detroit Free Press, under bills sent to Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, snowmobilers would see an increase in fees in order to avoid a $1 million deficit in the state’s snowmobiling budget.
The state Senate approved the higher fees, which would see the cost of trail permits rise from $25 to $35 for 2009 and 2010. Fees would also increase to $45 for 2011 through 2015, while future increases would be tied to the inflation rate.
The three-year snowmobile registration fee would also rise from $22 to $30 and the fine for operating a snowmobile without proper registration would jump from $50 to $200 on July 1. Some of that money would go toward expanding and preserving snowmobile trails.
Gov. Granholm’s signature is still required to make these fee increases a reality, but the governor’s office has not indicated whether she will sign the bills.
