Polaris Industries Inc., of Medina Minn. has recalled about 28,000 snowmobiles due to a problem with the fuel tank that poses a fire hazard.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the fuel tank filler neck can crack and separate, allowing for fuel or fuel vapors to leak from the tank. There have been reports of 1,048 incidents of the filler neck cracking or leaking, but no injuries have been reported.

The recall involves certain Polaris snowmobiles from the 2004-07 model years (see below for complete list).

Polaris and the CPSC say that consumers should immediately stop using the recalled snowmobiles. Vehicle owners should contact their Polaris dealer to schedule a free installation of a new fuel tank assembly.

Polaris has directly notified registered consumers who have not already received a repair.
