OFSC issues Red Alert
Warm weather forces temporary closure of snowmobile trails
After an early start to the season, snowmobilers in Ontario may have to wait a little while before hitting the trails again.
The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) has issued a Red Alert and is asking riders to stay off all OFSC trails until further notice because current conditions pose an extreme risk.
“Please be patient and we’ll be back in the saddle soon,” the OFSC says.
Milder temperatures and rain may cause flooding, washouts, open water and bare or icy trail surfaces. Most OFSC trails have been closed temporarily this week.
The OFSC also warns enthusiasts not to ride on any frozen waterways this week as ice conditions are unstable due to the warmer temperatures.
According to the OFSC, this winter is the earliest start for snowmobiling since 1993 and trails usually aren’t open until mid-January.
