Snow Guns are Blazing at ACSS Snocross National in Michigan
Snow guns are running full blast and all systems are “GO” for this Friday’s running of the Western Power Sports Michigan National, presented by Tim Horton’s, at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich. This is the highest-attended event of the snocross racing season.
“Despite the rumors there’s plenty of snow at the ‘Dome in light of the highly publicized national snow drought that the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series (ACSS) has been battling all year,” the ACSS says in a release.
ACSS track builders are confident that this Friday’s race course will be every bit as good as the one last year that led to such thrilling and closely-fought racing at the Silverdome.
Here’s a look at the measures the ACSS has gone through to insure there’s plenty of snow at the ‘Dome come Friday:
• Nine high-powered snow guns, including three TechnoAlpin snow making guns – considered to be the best-in-the-business – are running at full blast at night, creating a mountain of snow. • Special chillers are cooling down the hydrant water temp before it even hits the lines to the snow making machines. • Snomax is being added to the process to insure snow can be made at temperatures considerably warmer than the ideal 20-degrees with 100-percent humidity. • A massive tent was constructed with multiple refrigeration units cooling the temperatures enough to make snow inside the tent if needed. • The stock pile for snow at the Silverdome right now – with several nights of snow making still available – is at 4,000 square yards. Last year’s ACSS track inside the Silverdome was made with roughly 5,600 square yards of snow … so this weekend’s race is well on its way to equaling last year’s snow totals despite the lack of natural snow in southeastern Michigan.
“I’m confident we’ll be able to pull this off without any problems,” says ISOC Director of Operations/Racing Director Carl Schubitzke. “The weather looks stable heading into Friday and, if for any reason we need more snow, we have contractors waiting at Chrysler (Auburn Hills), General Motors (Lake Orion) and Detroit Metro Airport to truck in any additional snow we may need.”
